Tomorrow is Day Three of the WI Book Festival

•October 16, 2008 • Leave a Comment

My phone is off right now, so everyone PM me confirmations of whether or not we can meet/ hang out.  I’m going to be attending the following talks tomorrow.

Friday, October 17
5:00 – 6:30 PM ECOpreneuring: Putting Purpose and the Planet Before Profits @Promenade Hall/Overture

8:00 – 11:00 PM Amy Goodman, Jeremy Scahill, & Bob McChesney: The Media Now @Barrymore Theatre  A big-time radical cast comes together for a hard-hitting event: “Media Matters” host and former UW professor Bob McChesney, the recently arrested host of “Democracy Now!” Amy Goodman, and Jeremy Scahill, whose Blackwater exposé sparked a Congressional inquiry. The event will be opened by a short set from Ken Waldman, Alaska’s Fiddling Poet and author of more than seven books, including As the World Burns, a collection of poems in the voice of George W. Bush.

I’m really excited about this talk about the Media Now.  I’ve followed the Democracy Now! program, and the Blackwater book is on my personal list of books to read.      IF YOU CAN NOT MAKE IT TO ANY OTHER DISCUSSION GROUP/PRESENTATION THIS ONE I WOULD SAY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT!

And, yes, I know that Anne Beattie is speaking as well Friday night, and yes, I am still choosing this track over hers.

Tomorrow is Day Two of the WI Book Festival

My phone is off right now, so everyone PM me confirmations of whether or not we can meet/ hang out.  I’m definitely going to be attending the following talk tomorrow.

Thursday, October 16

7:00 – 8:30 PM Religion and Print Culture: Paul S. Boyer & Charles Cohen Pres House

Mingling God and Mammon, piety and polemics, and prescriptions for this world and the next, modern Americans have created a culture of print that is vibrantly religious. Print media — religious tracts, newsletters, cartoons, pamphlets, self-help books, mass-market paperbacks, and editions of the Bible from the King James Version to contemporary “Bible-zines” — have shaped and been shaped by experiences of faith since the Civil War.

I’m excited to hear this talk since my childhood was deeply impacted by a church that capitalized on mass media, publishing, and modern distribution to spread “The Word.”

I’m sure that coffee beforehand could be very fun, perhaps afterward too.

The next wave in video editing? This technology is centered around being able to “unwrap” a subject while in motion, then edit the “unwrapped” subject, and recompose in full motion video, with your edits moving, and composed with the original subject.

Confusing?  Check out the video, and your jaw WILL drop!
